Today, there are separate early warning systems for extreme heat and air pollution in India. A new project will assess exposure and health impacts from concurrent extreme heat and air pollution in Delhi and Kolkata and work to make a joint early warning system for both these challenges.

Heat-related deaths and diseases are a major concern in Europe amid increasing extended periods of extreme heat. This study proposes a novel way of quantifying and projecting future vulnerability to heat stress in different areas of a city, providing local decision-makers with knowledge for designing more effective adaptation strategies to minimize health impacts of heat stress.

Despite the many policies implemented by national governments and promoted by global bodies, solid fuel remains by far the dominant fuel used for cooking in most low and middle-income countries of South Asia and Africa, while solid fuel (both biomass and coal) is used for heating in much of East and Central Europe and Northern China.

The COPE project will develop advanced Early Warning and Decision-support Systems for heat and air pollution in the two major Indian urban conglomerates - Delhi and Kolkata.

These include how atmospheric aerosols affect the Earth’s radiation budget, and the roles of clouds and oceans in driving climate change.

Atmospheric Sciences

The research group covers a broad range of topics within the atmospheric sciences. We are primarily a modelling group, studying radiative forcing of the climate system, and the role of gases, aerosols and clouds.

Climate and health

The climate and health research group is an interdisciplinary group with strong competence within a range of areas of relevance to health impact assessment.

Climate and nature risk

The research group models and analyzes climate impacts on nature, society and the economy, performs scenario analyses, and conducts stress tests based on its knowledge and expertise in using climate and economic models and climate and other environmental data.
