Heatwaves hit the most vulnerable hardest

Published 6.11.2026

Climate change is increasingly impacting people's health all over the world. As heatwaves become hotter and more frequent, the most vulnerable suffer the most.

Researchers and experts warn FIFA over World Cup heat risk and player’s health

Published 21.5.2026

Researchers and medical experts are warning FIFA that the measures put in place to address extreme heat during the football World Cup this summer are inadequate and could put players' health at risk.

Protecting health and equity in a warming Europe

Published 29.8.2025

Heat is an evident cause of mortality among people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with higher risks when combined with exposure to air pollution. Kristin Aunan, research director and climate scientist at CICERO, and her team have extensively studied these effects and evaluated equitable interventions to reduce their impacts.

Will develop advanced early warning and decision-support systems for heat and air pollution in Delhi and Kolkata

Published 18.3.2025

Today, there are separate early warning systems for extreme heat and air pollution in India. A new project will assess exposure and health impacts from concurrent extreme heat and air pollution in Delhi and Kolkata and work to make a joint early warning system for both these challenges.

New tool provides knowledge on heat stress vulnerability in cities for more targeted adaptation

Published 9.10.2024

Heat-related deaths and diseases are a major concern in Europe amid increasing extended periods of extreme heat. This study proposes a novel way of quantifying and projecting future vulnerability to heat stress in different areas of a city, providing local decision-makers with knowledge for designing more effective adaptation strategies to minimize health impacts of heat stress.

Clean Cooking and Climate Change Impacts

Published 1.3.2024

Household Air Pollution (HAP) ranks as the ninth leading risk factor for premature mortality globally. Through the CICERO-led project 4CImpacts we have worked on clean cooking and climate change impacts in Tanzania.

The turbulent future brings a breath of fresh air

Published 28.6.2023

In the future, an increase in turbulence will alleviate the intensity of near-surface air pollution, according to a new paper by CICERO researchers published in Nature Communications. The findings bring a positive message showing the added benefits of mitigation.

The oldest source of air pollution still prevails

Published 13.3.2023

Twenty-two years into the twenty-first century, the oldest source of air pollution still prevails. Despite the many policies implemented by national governments and promoted by global bodies, solid fuel remains by far the dominant fuel used for cooking in most low and middle-income countries of South Asia and Africa, while solid fuel (both biomass and coal) is used for heating in much of East and Central Europe and Northern China.

In flames: Air pollution and human health

Published 2.12.2022

While air pollution from PM2.5-emissions have been reduced in Europe and North America, air pollution from wildfires is increasing. With climate change, we will see more wildfires, risking that the impacts of the efforts that have been made to mitigate air pollution and related negative health effects could be diminished.

EMPHASIS - Exploring Mitigation Pathways for Holistic Sustainable development in Indian States

EMPHASIS develops novel knowledge on climate mitigation and energy transition pathways at Indian state and national levels, and their synergies and trade-offs with sustainable development in terms of energy security, economic growth, air quality, health and social justice.

Combined impact of heat and air pollution exposure on human health in India: Evidence and solutions (COPE)

The COPE project will develop advanced Early Warning and Decision-support Systems for heat and air pollution in the two major Indian urban conglomerates - Delhi and Kolkata.

Planet4Health - Translating Science into Policy: A Multisectoral Approach to Adaptation and Mitigation of Adverse Effects of Vector-Borne Diseases, Environmental Pollution and Climate Change on Planetary Health

The PLANET4HEALTH project aims to deepen the understanding on how environmental degradation impacts human, animal and ecosystem health. Through collaboration with experts across disciplines, the project aims to support policy making processes and raise citizens awareness on sustainable planetary health, climate & environmental policies and adaptation & mitigation strategies to natural hazards.

Embodying Climate Change (EmCliC) - transdiciplinary research on urban overheating

EmCliC is a three-year research project that brings together social anthropology, sociology, climate science, epidemiology, atmospheric physics and novel technology, to understand and demonstrate how people experience climate change on a daily basis.

4CImpacts - Universal Energy Access: Clean cooking and climate change impacts

Lack of access to clean cooking technology is the single largest environmental risk factor for disease and disability in countries relying on traditional biomass fuels for household energy due to household air pollution.

Quantifying health risks from heat and air pollution (HEATCOST)

HEATCOST will quantify health risks attributable to heat and air pollution (with a particular focus on air pollution from wildfires) in main world regions under selected climate scenarios and socioeconomic pathways.

EXHAUSTION

Increasing temperatures and heat waves due to climate change, combined with air pollution, constitute major health risks, and could cause an increase in cardiovascular and respiratory diseases across Europe. EXHAUSTION (Exposure to heat and air pollution in Europe – cardiopulmonary impacts and benefits of mitigation and adaptation) aims to quantify the changes in cardiopulmonary mortality and morbidity due to extreme heat and air pollution (including from wildfires) under selected climate scenarios.
