COP30: Greening Achilles’ heel sectors: Possibilities and barriers to climate policies in Latin American primary industry sectors
Latin America has a unique biodiversity and abundant natural resources, making the region’s climate politics indispensable for attaining global environmental targets. Most Latin American countries also have large export-oriented primary industries like fossil-fuel extraction, mining, and industrial agriculture.

Climate policy changes in these sectors are needed for a credible Latin American contribution to the global green transition. However, in sectors like mining and agriculture, continued production and growth is also important for green technology and food security, making it important to better understand how sectoral actors, governments, knowledge communities, and civil society can work together for just green transitions in the sectors. We are gathering researchers, representatives from the business sector, civil society, and negotiators to discuss and share views around barriers and opportunities for climate policymaking in the current context, with a special focus on Brazil, industrial agriculture, mining and tropical forests.
