ClimINVEST scientific factsheets - building financial decision-makers' understanding

This suite of scientific factsheets aim to build financial decision-makers' understanding about physical climate risk assessment, data needs, climate modeling and extreme events.

Publishing date

ClimINVEST is a research project aimed at improving understanding of physical climate risk. It brings climate scientists and investors together to provide transparency on methodologies for physical climate risk assessment and develop guidance tools that inform investors’ risk management processes. The suite of scientific factsheets are such guidance tools and they are evaluated by a selected group of financial actors prior to publishing.

Climate hazard: Floods and physical climate risk

This fact sheet introduces the basics about floods, describes the sectors that are most affected by this hazard with examples from different locations across the world. It also explains the relevant indicators that investors can use to evaluate and anticipate their exposure to physical climate risks from floods. DOWNLOAD

Climate hazard: Drought and physical climate risk

This factsheet introduces some key considerations for investors assessing their exposure and vulnerability to droughts, what to consider when using data on drought, and how drought can impact different sectors. It also takes a closer look at potential interventions available to manage the impact of droughts by sector and illustrates the impacts using case study examples from current events. DOWNLOAD

Climate hazard: Heat and physical climate risk

This factsheet is intended to help investors understand how increasing temperatures can affect their portfolios, how heat stress is scientifically defined, what to consider when using data on heat stress, and how heat stress can impact different sectors. It also takes a closer look at potential interventions available to manage the impact of heat stress by sector and illustrates the impacts using case study examples from current events. DOWNLOAD

Climate modeling 101

This factsheet provides an overview of the basics of climate modeling and the uncertainties that come with them.DOWNLOAD

Climate risk

This factsheet focuses on the basic elements of physical climate risk assessment. DOWNLOAD

Case study: The Wall

This case study ― The Wall, a shopping centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands ― demonstrates a high-level physical climate risk screening and considerations that should be taken into account for a real estate asset. DOWNLOAD

How exposed is my real estate portfolio to flooding, drought or heat stress? Which physical climate risks are impacting my assets now and in the future? The Dutch Climate Impact Atlas provides information for answering these kinds of questions.DOWNLOAD.

Dutch Climate Damage Atlas

How can municipalities estimate climate related risk in monetary terms? How vulnerable are my assets for current and future climate damages due to drought? Should I start worrying about soil subsidence? Will flood damages impact the future value of my assets? DOWNLOAD
