CICERO presents - A full day with climate knowledge

In the coming years, global warming will likely exceed 1.5 degrees, and "bending the curve" refers to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to slow down or reverse the trend of rising global temperatures.

This will be an interactive workshop aimed at financial sector actors involved in climate transition risk assessment, stress testing, and decision making. The focus of the workshop will be on how climate scenarios can meet financial sector needs, and where alternatives to existing scenarios are needed. 

Are we on track with reducing emissions to reach our climate goals under the Paris Agreement? Can satellites help countries estimate their emissions and better understand progress towards their climate targets? 

The EU has already decided to launch satellites to support the measurement of co₂ emissions from space. In a few years the Copernicus Carbon Dioxide Monitoring mission (co₂M) will continuously measure co₂ in the atmosphere which can be used to independently estimate co₂ emissions. At this event we share knowledge from research and practice on verification of emissions and look at how this will be increasingly relevant in the years ahead.

Cities play an important role in our economy and society, but are also particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, such as extreme heat. However, there are specific policies that can be put in place to reduce these impacts and make cities more livable. This session will highlight some of these measures.

With global warming, we are experiencing more frequent and intense heat. Increasing temperatures impact both people and societies with economic and social consequences. Cities are hotspots for heat exposure. Sectors such as agriculture, energy and health are affected. There is a need to better understand the effects when several impacts occur at the same time, for example heatwaves and droughts. Exposure to heat and air pollution at the same time amplifies the health risks. But there are inequalities in the exposure to heat and some people are more vulnerable. Our researchers shed insights on this with posters and informal Q&A sessions.
